Von der Leyen Arrives in Paris With a Smile — and €131 Billion for Europe’s Space Mission! European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived at the Paris Space Summit with a wide smile — and a huge financial ambition for Europe’s future in space. During her speech, von der Leyen set out Europe’s strategy for a new space age built around sovereignty, security, investment and technological independence. At the centre of the plan is a proposed €131 billion envelope for defence, security and space. She also backed the expansion of Europe’s IRIS² secure communications constellation to more than 350 satellites, strengthening Europe’s ability to communicate independently during crises and security emergencies. Another major pillar is the European Space Shield. Von der Leyen arrived smiling — but behind the smiles is a serious geopolitical mission. Europe wants a major role in the new global space race. #VonDerLeyen #SpaceSummit #EuropeanSpace #SpaceRace #eudebates
